Memorial Day

So it's a little late, but I was looking through my pictures and found some really cute ones of Wedge on Memorial Day. Enjoy!

It's hard to tell, but we spiked his hair. He's such a good sport!

This is in Richmond at Nick's grandparent's grave. There is also a memorial of one of Nick's ancestor's that came across the plains with the saints. Maybe you've heard of them... James and Druscilla Hendricks...!

We tried really hard to get Wedge to pose for more pictures, but he wasn't having it anymore. Usually he's really good at posing for the camera, but there was just too much to explore.

4 Years And Going Strong!

Mine and Nick's 4 year anniversary is on Thursday. It's hard to believe it's gone by so quickly. These last 4 years have brought some interesting experiences and a lot of firsts:

~Moved to Utah
~Lived in Nauvoo for 6 weeks right after we got married
~Got our first apartment (1 bedroom) in North Salt Lake
~Upgraded to a two bedroom apartment in the same complex 6 months later
~Attended SLCC
~Lived alone for 6 weeks in a still unfamiliar Utah while Nick was in Nauvoo working
~Moved to Logan
~Lived with Nick's Grandma for a month until we found jobs and an apartment
~Paid off our car
~Nick's car died so we bought a new one
~Attending Utah State University
~Nick wrote a book
~Went camping together for the first time
~Witnessed a crime
~2 months later got subpoenad
~Testified in court
~6 months later got subpoenad again for the same crime
~Bought a house
~Bought a puppy

Basically 4 years in a nutshell. Hopefully one day the list will also include ~graduated from USU and ~had a baby, but for now we have to be patient. Nick and I have a neat tradition for our Anniversary. We don't exchange gifts partly because our birthdays are so close to our anniversary, but mostly because I don't like keeping up with traditions that need to be bigger and better every year. I wanted to have a tradition that was meaningful and special, not that gift giving can't be those things, but most of the time it's just stressful trying to find "the perfect gift". Instead Nick and I decided to do Temple Sealings on (or the weekend closest to) our anniversary. It's not the only time we do it throughout the year, but it's special to do it on our anniversary because it gives it a sacred meaning. It's nice to reflect back on the covenants we made and be reminded of those promises. It makes me feel closer to Nick and strengthens our relationship between each other and our Heavenly Father. I'm excited because this year we get to go on our actual anniversary since neither of us work that morning. I love going to the Temple with Nick and I absolutley love being married to him. He is my everything and makes me want to be a better wife because he deserves to have someone that loves him unconditionally and see him the way the Lord sees him. Without a doubt my worst day with him is still so much better than my best day without him.

Nick's Book

Anyone who has any knowledge in getting a book published, I would really appreciate any tips and advice I can get. Nick finished writing a book over a year ago, close to a year and a half, and we both really want to see it published even if that's as far as it goes. He spent a very long time on it. In fact, I believe he started writing it right after we got married and three years later finished it.

I read it and really enjoyed it. Maybe I'm partial because I love the writer, but for a fantasy book (which is not a genre I particularly like) it is really good. There were a lot of twists and unexpected events and characters that are mentioned in the beginning and show up again in the end. The way everything unfolds and ties together is brilliant!

It is amazing to me to see a book come together. It is definitely something I don't have talent for and I'm SO proud of my husband for being able to see this through from start to finish. The publishing company he wanted to go through is no longer taking submissions due to the way the economy has effected them so Nick has looked into some others. The one he wants to go through now told us we have to pay to have it printed which can be anywhere between 5 and 10 thousand dollars depending on the size of the book and the number of copies. Yikes! It doesn't seem right to have to pay them does it?

It would really help if anyone could enlighten us on where to go from here. As of now it is either just under or just over 300 pages front and back on regular copy paper. Nick is working hard to edit it and has been cutting a lot out, but also adding a lot in as far as character developement goes. It's coming along nicely, but if it doesn't get into "final copy" form soon I think he'll spend the rest of his life perfecting it! Please help!

Puppy updates...

Sometimes I'm glad my puppy doesn't understand english; although most of the time it's frustrating when I tell him to stop doing something and he looks at me like, uh, hello, I don't speak jibberish. Today, however, was a good day for him to be in the dark on what he was up against. He had to have a tooth pulled. I'm sure he didn't understand why I did't give him treats last night and this morning when he went potty like a big boy, but he wasn't aloud to eat anything after 10:00pm. They had to make an incision and give him stitches so they put him under for the procedure.

When we went to pick him up the front desk clerk said everything went really well. She told us that they gave him a shot that made him really loopy and confused and that he cried for a long time because he didn't like not having control. I can completely relate with that because I felt the same way when I had my wisdom teeth pulled and I cried too! I didn't like going through the motions of doing things and not have any control over what I was doing. It was like I was an outsider looking in and I hated it.

Anyway, Wedge is home now safe and sound. He's been pretty whiney/grunty. I'm sure at this point he's curled up in Nick's lap fast asleep. He'll probably sleep the rest of the day. Sadly, this is the second surgery he's had and he's only 8 months old. I sure hope the first year is the hardest in having a puppy becase at the rate we're going we won't be able to afford him much longer (not really)! But he's easily our most expensive investment which is saying something... I thought the Playstation 3 was bad! :)

Relay For Life

I understand if you don't want to read this post because I didn't take any pictures at Relay for Life. However, it was a HUGE success and I want to thank everyone that supported me or better yet put up with me this last year in preparing for it. I wasn't very successful in finding sponsors this year which is what my responsibility was. Last year was a lot better in that regard. But even without as many sponsors as last year we were still able to raise $16,000 to help the American Cancer Society find a cure for cancer and for that I am grateful. Cancer affects everyone in some way. When I was in high school all the students gathered in the gym for an assembly to pump us up for Relay For Life which our school was hosting. They had all 2400 students stand and as they asked three questions if they applied to us we were asked to sit down. 1. If you know anyone who has died from cancer take a seat. 2. If you or a family member has or had cancer take a seat. 3. If you know someone (friend, co-worker, ward member, etc.) who has or had cancer take a seat. I honestly don't remember a single person still standing. That's when it hit me that I wanted to support this great event for as long as I can because everyone will benefit from finding a cure.

Being on the committee to help put this whole event together is a LOT of work. I volunteered a great deal of my time to find sponsors and while I was working full time and going to school it was pretty stressful. Once I cut back my hours at work it wasn't as bad, but still time consuming. I've decided it's really hard to ask people for money and even harder to be turned down. Next year I'd rather count the money than ask for it! Even though it was a lot of work and at times pretty stressful and discouraging, every second of it was worth it to see it all come together in the end. I'm excited for next year's event and can't wait to try out a new Chair position. I want to do the Accounting Chair, but I'm also leaning towards another Chair that is slipping my memory, but it's basically pumping up the teams and getting them excited for Relay and for fundraising.

The event went from 6pm to 7am, but one of the disadvantages of being on the committee is staying after to clean up. I didn't sleep the whole night because I was too busy with our raffle, penny war, and t-shirt sale that there wasn't time to even think about sleeping so by the time I left at 8:30am I was pretty exhausted. Even if I didn't have things to keep me busy I don't think I would have slept though. All in all I'm glad everything turned out okay and we didn't have any mishaps. One girl got hit in the eye with a volleyball, but other than that everything was good.

Cancer never sleeps and we won't stop until we find a cure.

Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back.

Chicken Soup for the Be A Better Parent Soul

I started a new journal this weekend and I'm really excited about it. This isn't my typical journal. I always come up with random thoughts of different things I want to do with my kids someday; whether it be different teaching techniques, games, traditions, or whatever my head thinks of, I know that when the time comes to do those things I won't remember so I decided I should start writing them down. A lot of things I think of would be for when they're older so for sure I won't remember by that time.
An example of something that will go in this journal is I remember when I was a cheerleader in jr high I carpooled with another girl on the squad after practice. After a full day of school and then an hour or two of cheer practice I would always be STARVING when I got home. The girl's mom that I carpooled with always brought her something to eat on the ride home from practice and I thought that was a good idea and wanted to do that for my kids someday. It's something kind of silly, but I would have LOVED it if my mom brought me something to eat when she picked me up from school.
Another thing that I think would be fun to do (probably with just my girls) is start a book club when they're young and as their reading skills advance so will the books we read. I think it's one thing to read to your kids, but it's different to call it a book club and actually discuss the books we read. I think our book club will be a little different than most. Rather than read the book before we meet, we'll probably read the book together as part of our club.
With that I also thought it would be fun to do a recipe club where once a month we do a theme and each of us make a dish pertaining to that theme such as chinese food or finger foods. That way my kids can learn how to cook and prepare a variety of dishes instead of be like me when they get married and only really know how to chop lettuce and dice tomatoes (which is all my mom ever asked us to help with in the kitchen)!
I think mommy/son and daddy/daughter dates would be fun. With that I remember when I was younger how much I would have loved to get to spend a day just my mom and me, but with three other sisters that NEVER happened. There was one time I got to go to a crafting fair with my mom and I loved it. I don't remember why my other sisters didn't come, but I was so glad to have that time alone with my mom and not have to share her attention. That's why I think we should have parent/child dates where we get to spend one on one time with each other.
These are just a few of the memories I have of things I wanted to do once I was a mom. Now the fun part is I get to go through all of my past journals and see if anything sparks a memory for other things that I can do. I have so many ideas already, but I want to go back and read my journals because obviously my thinking has changed and I might think something is a good idea, but a child might think other wise. Certain things are more important than others when you're little and it's easy to forget so I want to read my journals to try and remember how I felt about things like my first day of jr high, boys, hobbies, friends, needs, wants, and so on.
I always kept journals because I felt like they were for my own benefit. Now I can see that by having them I am able to go back and learn from them. Hopefully they will help me be a better mom and when I'm frustrated that my child thinks they should start wearing make-up when they're, to me, still too young, I can read and remember how frustrated I was when I was their age and had to be 13 to wear make-up which was half way through the second semester of my 7th grade year and how everyone noticed and teased me about it. That's the idea anyway. It probably won't help any, but here's hoping!

I'm not obsessed

Wow! Judging by my blog you'd think I'm obsessed with my puppy or something! All my posts and pictures are of him. But he's the only exciting thing going on right now. He's like a little kid. I love teaching him new tricks and he's so dependent on me. He's lost several puppy teeth and whine's just as much as a little kid does. He currently knows sign language for sit and lay down. But he also knows how to stay, come, fetch, drop it, leave it, take it, roll over, and high five. I love teaching him new things. I get so excited when I can tell he's finally caught on. He has the cutest personality and I just can't help but talk about him! Without him the only thing to talk about would be work and school which would make having a blog pretty boring and pointless! So to spice things up... you get puppy stories!

Bath Time!

Wedgie absolutely LOVES water. The first time he took a bath he wasn't so sure about it. He kept lifting his paws up like he was trying to get away from the water, but obviously was unsuccessful. He shivered and whined the whole time. Now I'm pretty sure he looks forward to bath time. He whines if I take too long to put him in the tub! I had to post bath time pictures because he doesn't even look like the same puppy. He looks so funny to me when he's all wet. Especially since I'm used to his ears being fluffy. He wasn't very happy about me taking these pictures. I had to run downstairs to get the camera and by the time I got back he was cold and ready to be dried off. After he gets out of the tub he runs around the house like he's hopped up on crazy pills. He does a good ten laps before he finally digs around in his favorite blanket trying to find a warm spot. Once he's finally settled in he goes to sleep. This is pretty much our bath time routine now. I love giving him a bath and I'd do it daily if he was aloud!

Wedgie's First Christmas!

Nick and I have a tradition of opening pajamas on Christmas Eve.We felt like Wedge needed to have a Christmas Even present too so I got him the cutest little sweater! Nick says there's only two days out of the year that I'm aloud to put Wedge in clothes; Christmas and his birthday. I'm actually not even sure his sweater
will still fit him. He's gotten SO big since Christams. We decided he needed to have a present to open on Christmas day too. He was so dang cute opening it.He wasn't interested in trying to open presents the whole time they sat under the tree, but the second we gave him one of his own he tore into it.He was literally like a little kid on Christmas morning. He was so excited to see what we got him and once he got it out he was perfectly content to play with it while the rest of us opened presents. We got him the cutest little elephant. It's a baby toy that's supposed to hang on a carseat or stroller. When you tug on it the body vibrates and makes the feet rattle. Baby toys are so much cuter than puppy toys! And, my dad had no trouble helping Wedge break in his new toy!!! For those of you who know my mom you know she is not a fan of pets, but even she enjoyed watching Wedge open his Christmas present. All in all I'd say Wedgie's first christmas was a success!

Oh what to say...

I was pretty excited to start a blog and I did pretty good there for a while with keeping it updated; and then school started... enough said! Mostly it's just because I haven't had anything fun or exciting to share. Nick and I have been keeping busy with work and school and taking care of our sweet puppy. Life is pretty much in a daily cycle right now with no changes to mix things up a little.

We're breaking in our new church callings. He's been called to be a ward missionary. With that we've had families in our home every weekend to eat dinner and play games with us. He also had to teach the gospel doctrine class on sunday and did amazing. Maybe I'm just partial though! I'm the new primary chorister and I love it!!! I was really nervous about it when my bishop first issued the call because I have absolutely no music ability in me. I try to be musically enclined, but it just isn't working for me. My primary has 9 kids in it all sunbeams and younger! They are absolutely adorable. We sing the same songs every sunday and although the kids don't sing very much, they sure know the signs and actions and they are so dang cute doing them! Since we only have junior primary in our ward I leave sunday school a little early to teach singing time for 15-20 minutes and then can go to Relief Society a little late and still get all my adult time in! I was worried having a primary calling would mean I wouldn't get to know the sisters in the ward and since nick and I are still fairly new I didn't want that to happen. Thankfully, that's not the case!

Nick and I have definitely been blessed with the callings we've been given. Neither one of us were very excited when we first got our calls, but I think we've both come to realize the joy we receive from serving in them. I think Nick enjoys his new calling more than he will admit and that's okay, he can secretly like it!
